Description
I married a Filipina and moved to the Philippines believing that living near her family would make the transition easier.
Her relatives welcomed me, invited me to meals, brought food to our home, and included me in family gatherings. Nobody treated me badly. Yet the longer I stayed, the more I began to feel like an outsider.
Most conversations happened in a language I couldn’t understand. Family plans seemed to form around me, visitors arrived without warning, and I slowly began spending more time alone inside the house.
I thought her family was keeping me at a distance.
What I eventually realized was much harder to admit.
While I was waiting for them to make me feel included, they believed they were giving me the space I wanted. I had been quietly removing myself without ever explaining how I felt.
This is a first-person story about marrying into a Filipino family, adjusting to life in the Philippines, dealing with cultural differences, and learning that being welcomed and truly feeling at home are not always the same thing.
Have you ever felt like an outsider even when the people around you were trying to welcome you? Share your experience in the comments.
