Description

Count what is hanging on your walls tonight. Not the photographs. The heavy things. Every one of them is held up by something you have never seen and did not choose, and my guess is that two of them are already loose. I hung everything that went on a wall in one public school for forty years. Fire extinguishers, first aid boxes, clocks, soap dispensers, bulletin cases, the paper towel holders in thirty-two bathrooms. When one came down, nobody called a contractor. They called me, and I had to stand there and explain why. Here is what is in this video. The ten second test that tells you which things in your house are already going. It costs nothing, you do it with two fingers, and you can do it before you finish reading this. How to find the wood in your wall without the twenty-five dollar gadget in your drawer that beeps at one spot twice and a different spot the third time. There is a way that costs nothing and does not lie. Why the number printed on that bag of anchors is really two numbers, and why nobody tells you which one you are looking at. One well known maker publishes both for the same anchor in the same wall: a hundred and fifty three pounds one way, sixty nine pounds the other. Same piece of plastic. Less than half. Then something I did not expect when I went looking. There is a published standard for anchors in concrete. For anchors in gypsum board there is no standard at all, so when two packages on the same shelf both say fifty pounds, those two fifties were not measured the same way. Why how far your shelf sticks out from the wall matters more than what is sitting on it, and the nine years I spent re-hanging paper towel dispensers while blaming the wrong thing entirely. And the last one, which is what tradesmen actually do and what your building code quietly requires. It is not an anchor. It costs about fourteen dollars and it outlives the house. There is also one thing in here I cannot prove, and I say so out loud in the video rather than dress it up as science. I was never an engineer and I never said I was. #HomeMaintenance #DrywallAnchors #DIY
