Description

The difference between a logotype and a jewel. Jobs said: "Most companies have a logotype. Every once in a while, a company has a little jewel - a symbol you can use without the name." At Apple, they were lucky - the symbol WAS the name. An Apple. But here's the problem: "Usually it takes 10 years and a hundred million dollars to associate a symbol with the name in the customer's mind." Apple's challenge was - How do we make a jewel we can put on the product WITHOUT writing Apple, without spending 10 years and $100M? Paul Rand solved it. He didn't make art for art's sake. He approached it as a business problem to be solved - he made a jewel that CONTAINED the name of the company inside it. The bite + the Apple shape. My take - Branding Lesson: Your logo is not decoration. It's a business problem. Most founders ask: "Does it look cool?" Rand asked: "Can someone 100 feet away know it's Apple without reading Apple?" That's why you see the bitten Apple on a MacBook and you KNOW. Hack for you: If your logo doesn't work without your company name next to it, you don't have a jewel, you have a logotype. And you still have to pay the 10 years and $100M to teach people what it means. Great logos solve a problem, not just look pretty.
