Description

In 2007, BlackBerry owned 50% of the US market and was valued at over $20 Billion. When Steve Jobs announced the first iPhone for $499, many industry leaders were skeptical. In this pricing masterclass clip, Steve Jobs breaks down his strategy: An iPod was $199. A smartphone was $299. So people were already spending $499 for two devices with a compromised experience. "They sort of do music, but nobody uses them for music because they're not very good." But iPhone offered so much more - video, widescreen display, multi-touch, Wi-Fi, a real browser, Google Maps, and a true iPod experience all in one. So what did he charge? "For 4GB model, we're going to price it at that same $499. No premium whatsoever." He didn't add the value on top. He replaced the combo at the same price. It was a shift in how people understood value. Instead of paying for two average products, you paid the same for one exceptional product. BlackBerry bet on the keyboard. Apple bet on the experience. Within a few years, the market had completely changed. Lesson: Don't compete on price. Compete on perceived value. Make your product feel like a no-brainer.
