Description
Severe flooding brought Istanbul, Türkiye, to a standstill on October 14, 2026, after torrential rain overwhelmed roads, homes, public transport, and emergency services. Some neighborhoods recorded their heaviest rainfall since 1985, with nearly 9.5 inches measured in Beykoz. By Thursday, October 15, two people had died, including a 14-year-old boy who suffered an electric shock after stepping into a puddle in the historic Fatih district.
The storm triggered road collapses, 15 landslides, flooded hospitals and metro stations, and extensive damage across the city. Hundreds of workers became trapped at their workplaces, while rescuers and residents helped people escape rising water. Authorities deployed around 8,000 workers and 2,000 vehicles and heavy machines as thousands of emergency calls came in. Flights were diverted, schools closed, and motorcycle travel was suspended.
In this video, we examine the two confirmed deaths, the dangers hidden in floodwater, the collapse of roads and school infrastructure, and the emergency response across Istanbul.
Floodwater also entered the historic Sadabad Mosque, while the Kagithane Stream overflowed its banks. Officials warned that additional rain could fall across the Asian side and areas near the Bosphorus, where the ground was already saturated. Residents were urged to avoid underpasses and creek beds, and people living in basement apartments were told to move to higher floors as the storm continued.
Confirmed casualty and missing-person figures are pinned in the comments and updated as official numbers change.
