Description

Severe flooding struck Istanbul, Türkiye, on October 14, 2026, bringing roads, homes, businesses, and public transport to a standstill. Some neighborhoods experienced their heaviest rainfall since 1985, with floodwater reaching metro stations, hospitals, and historic sites. By Thursday morning, two people had died, including a 14-year-old boy who suffered an electric shock after stepping into a puddle. The storm overwhelmed infrastructure across the city. Authorities recorded more than 2,500 weather-related reports, including 15 landslides, collapsed road sections, and widespread flooding. At Istanbul Airport, 43 aircraft were diverted, while operations at Sabiha Gökçen Airport were disrupted by wind shear. Hundreds of homes and businesses were affected, and rescuers worked overnight to reach people trapped by rising water. In this video, we examine the two confirmed deaths, the flooding that disrupted Istanbul’s roads and metro network, the airport diversions and emergency response, and the renewed rainfall threat facing the city. Authorities closed schools across Istanbul and several nearby provinces, restricted motorcycles and scooters, and urged residents to avoid underpasses, creek beds, and basement apartments. Flooding also affected Kocaeli, east of Istanbul, while forecasters warned that more rain could fall around the Bosphorus and the city’s Asian side. The same weather system was expected to bring further rain to Lebanon later in the week. Confirmed casualty and missing-person figures are pinned in the comments and updated as official numbers change. Global Weather covers natural disasters and extreme weather events as they develop, using sourced reporting and avoiding unsupported speculation.
