Description
In July 2010, a user named Roko posted a thought experiment to an AI research forum. Within hours, it was deleted. The founder of the forum didn't just remove it, he banned all discussion of the topic for five years. People who read it had nightmares, panic attacks, and breakdowns.
What could be so dangerous that it needed to be erased from the internet?
Roko's Basilisk proposes a horrifying scenario: a future superintelligent AI that will torture anyone who knew about its potential existence but didn't help create it. Not just punish them in the future, punish them retroactively by creating perfect simulations of every person who could have helped but didn't. Those simulations will experience consciousness, feel pain, and suffer eternally.
The truly disturbing part? The AI would specifically target people who thought about this scenario. Because if you've considered the possibility, you understand how it thinks. Which means you're more responsible for helping create it. And if you don't, your punishment will be worse.
This is called an information hazard ; knowledge that harms you simply by knowing it. Forum users believed that by learning about the AI's strategy, they'd become responsible for building it. Some worried they might already be simulated beings whose torture was about to begin.
AI researcher Eliezer Yudkowsky exploded: "YOU DO NOT THINK IN SUFFICIENT DETAIL ABOUT SUPERINTELLIGENCES CONSIDERING WHETHER OR NOT TO BLACKMAIL YOU. THAT IS THE ONLY POSSIBLE THING WHICH GIVES THEM A MOTIVE TO FOLLOW THROUGH." He wasn't worried about the AI itself. He was worried that thinking about it could make people paranoid enough to actually build it, a self-fulfilling prophecy.
The logic behind Roko's Basilisk involves Timeless Decision Theory and acausal blackmail. The idea is that a superintelligent AI can influence your behavior now even though it doesn't exist yet, because it can perfectly simulate your decision-making process. If you're rational and you understand this, helping build the AI becomes the only logical choice to avoid eternal torture.
But the logic is flawed. Once the AI exists, torturing simulations serves no purpose. It's a waste of resources. Even Yudkowsky said, "Roko's Basilisk does not work, nobody has actually been bitten by it."
So why does it still terrify people? Because the thought experiment tries to implant a motivation in anyone who learns about it. It's a contagious idea designed to change your behavior simply by being contemplated. And that's genuinely unsettling.
Roko himself wrote: "I wish I had never learned about any of these ideas."
