🚨 R100,000 FOR A PASSPORT? HOME AFFAIRS CORRUPTION UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT!
Corruption at South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs is back in the spotlight after reported arrests linked to the alleged illegal sale of passports. But could digital transformation, biometric verification, and stronger accountability finally help clean up the system?
In this video, we examine Professor Erwin Schwella’s perspective on the Home Affairs corruption crisis, the alleged passport scandal, and the difficult road towards meaningful reform.
🇿🇦 Here’s What Went Down
Two former Home Affairs officials were reportedly arrested in connection with the alleged sale of passports to foreign nationals for around R100,000 each. The interview also discussed a border management official allegedly found in possession of more than 20 passports belonging to Lesotho nationals.
Professor Schwella explains why he believes corruption can become systemic when greed, weak accountability, and poor organisational values are allowed to flourish.
🔍 Why This Matters
We look at the role of Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber’s digital transformation efforts, biometric verification, lifestyle audits, background checks, and stronger enforcement in tackling corruption.
Can technology help expose wrongdoing? And why might technology alone fail without integrity, political will, and real consequences?
⚖️ The Advantages and Disadvantages
Digital records can help investigators trace suspicious activity, while proper recruitment and lifestyle audits may help identify warning signs.
However, these measures require resources, effective oversight, and consistent enforcement. Changing an institutional culture takes time, and arrests or allegations alone do not establish guilt.
💭 And Let’s Be Real
South Africans deserve a Home Affairs system where identity documents are processed fairly, public officials serve citizens honestly, and nobody needs to pay a bribe to access a legitimate service.
Professor Schwella also invokes Ubuntu, reminding us that integrity must be demonstrated through actions, not just words.
🇿🇦 What’s Next?
Will digital transformation and stronger accountability make a real difference at Home Affairs, or must government do much more to break the cycle of corruption?

Do you believe Home Affairs can overcome systemic corruption? What should be the priority: technology, lifestyle audits, stronger recruitment checks, or tougher legal consequences?
