Description

The English Patient (1996) is a romantic war drama directed by Anthony Minghella, based on the novel by Michael Ondaatje. Set during World War II, the film follows a severely burned and unidentified man known as the English patient, who is cared for by Hana, a Canadian nurse, in an abandoned Italian monastery. As Hana looks after him, the patient gradually reveals memories of his past through flashbacks. Before the war, he was Count László de Almásy, a Hungarian cartographer exploring the Sahara Desert. His life changes when he develops a passionate relationship with Katharine Clifton, a married woman whose husband, Geoffrey, is part of his desert expedition. Their forbidden romance leads to jealousy, betrayal, and devastating consequences as war spreads across North Africa. In the present, Hana forms connections with other people sheltering at the monastery, including Sikh bomb-disposal expert Kip and Canadian intelligence officer David Caravaggio. As the past unfolds, the truth behind the patient's identity and tragic fate gradually emerges. Starring Ralph Fiennes, Juliette Binoche, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Willem Dafoe, the film explores forbidden love, memory, guilt, betrayal, and the lasting effects of war. It won nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.
