Description

But I'm a Cheerleader (1999) is a satirical romantic comedy directed by Jamie Babbit. The story follows Megan Bloomfield, a high school cheerleader whose conservative family and friends suspect she is a lesbian because of her behavior and interests. They send her to True Directions, a conversion therapy camp designed to make LGBTQ+ teenagers conform to traditional gender roles. At the camp, Megan meets Graham Eaton, a confident young woman who helps her question the beliefs she has been taught about sexuality and identity. As Megan participates in the camp's bizarre activities, she begins to understand her feelings and develops a romantic connection with Graham. However, their growing relationship conflicts with the camp's rules and expectations. Starring Natasha Lyonne, Clea DuVall, RuPaul, and Cathy Moriarty, the film uses colorful visuals, exaggerated stereotypes, and dark humor to criticize conversion therapy and society's pressure to suppress LGBTQ+ identities. Beneath its comedy, it tells a story about self-acceptance, freedom, and finding the courage to love someone openly.
