Description
Why does helium make your voice sound like a cartoon? Your vocal cords don't speed up. The real change happens in the space above them. Most people believe helium makes the vocal cords vibrate faster. In reality, they vibrate at almost the same rate as before. What changes is the gas around them. Sound travels about three times faster in helium than in air, so the resonances of your throat and mouth shift to higher frequencies. Your voice sounds higher and thinner, even though the pitch your vocal cords produce hasn't moved.
In this video, we cover:
How the larynx and vocal cords produce sound
How sound waves travel through different gases
Why gas density and speed of sound change the tone you hear
The most common myths about the helium voice, and what actually happens inside your throat
This explanation is made for students and curious viewers who want a clear, factual breakdown without unnecessary complexity.
Safety note: Do not inhale helium directly from a pressurized tank. Breathing helium displaces oxygen and can be dangerous.
