Description
In December 1915, on the frozen frontier of northern Hokkaido, a remote settlement faced the worst animal disaster in Japanese history.
In this episode of Wildlife Lounge, we document the true minute-by-minute breakdown of the Sankabetsu brown bear incident. Over six terrifying winter days, an exceptionally large Ezo brown bear, believed to be an anamochizu that failed to hibernate repeatedly breached isolated wooden cabins across the valley, resulting in seven deaths and three severe injuries.
From the initial tragedy at the Ota household to the chaotic siege of the Akagawa home, we analyze how severe isolation, winter conditions, and habituation created an unprecedented human-wildlife disaster. We also trace the tracking efforts of master winter hunter Yamamoto Heikichi and examine forestry officer Moritake Kimura's painstaking historical reconstruction that separated fact from campfire folklore.
