Description
On the morning of December 30th, 1947, a 26-year-old king walked into his own palace and found it surrounded by Soviet-trained troops. Within hours, he had been forced to sign a pre-typed abdication document, threatened with the execution of 1,000 young students if he refused. That was the end of over 80 years of Romanian monarchy, and the beginning of one of the strangest exile stories in European history.
King Michael I was no ordinary monarch. He arrested a fascist dictator at the age of 22, pulled Romania out of the Second World War, and received the highest military honors from both the United States and the Soviet Union, before Stalin's agents took everything he owned. Six castles, five palaces, thousands of hectares of land, art collections worth hundreds of millions, all seized overnight.
In this video, we trace what actually happened to the Romanian royal family after the communists took their kingdom. From the chicken farms of England where Michael tended birds to make ends meet, to the Learjet cockpits he flew as a test pilot, to the humiliating 1990 expulsion from Otopeni Airport, to the extraordinary 1992 Easter return when a million Romanians flooded the streets of Bucharest, to the state funeral in 2017 attended by Prince Charles and the royalty of Europe. We also get into the quiet rebuilding of the royal house under Princess Margareta, the ongoing legal battles over Peles Castle, and what the family looks like today in a country that officially no longer has a throne.
This is the full story of how a dynasty lost everything and somehow refused to disappear.
