In this documentary, we look at the real story of General Niazi, East Pakistan, the 1971 War and the Fall of Dhaka. General Niazi was a brave and highly decorated Pakistani Army officer. He fought in the Second World War, served in Burma, and later fought in the 1965 Pakistan-India War. He received military awards for his bravery and was known as “Tiger Niazi.” But after the 1971 War, his name became linked with the biggest defeat in Pakistan’s history. On 16 December 1971, the Pakistan Army surrendered in Dhaka and East Pakistan became Bangladesh. But was the surrender only General Niazi’s decision? What really happened in Dhaka in December 1971? Did Yahya Khan order General Niazi to stop fighting? What does the Hamoodur Rahman Commission Report say about the Fall of East Pakistan? Who was responsible for the political and military crisis in East Pakistan? What role did Yahya Khan, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, General Tikka Khan, GHQ and the military leadership play in the 1971 crisis? Why did General Niazi later write his book The Betrayal of East Pakistan? Why did General Niazi repeatedly ask for a court martial? Why was the Hamoodur Rahman Commission Report kept secret for many years? This documentary also looks at the serious allegations made against General Niazi, including allegations of corruption and sexual misconduct. We compare these claims with his own statements, books, interviews and historical accounts. We also look at the final days of the 1971 War, the Indian Army advance, the Pakistan Army in East Pakistan, the final battle for Dhaka and the events that led to the Fall of Dhaka. Was General Niazi responsible for the defeat? Was he made a scapegoat for the Fall of East Pakistan? Or was the 1971 tragedy the result of political mistakes, military failures, leadership failures and decisions made by several people? This is not just the story of General Niazi. It is the story of East Pakistan 1971, the Fall of Dhaka, the Bangladesh Liberation War and the biggest political and military crisis in Pakistan’s history. We present the facts, historical records, books, interviews and different claims. Watch the full documentary and decide for yourself: Was General Niazi guilty, or was he forced by circumstances and orders?
