In this documentary, we explore the untold story of Zia-ul-Haq, his rise to power, the military coup, martial law, the overthrow and execution of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, political repression, censorship, and the struggle between military rule and democracy in Pakistan.
We also look at Islamization in Pakistan and how General Zia-ul-Haq used Islam and religious policies during his rule. This includes Islamic laws, Islamic banking, Zakat, Sharia courts, the Hudood laws, Ramadan laws, and the political use of religion.
The documentary also covers the Zia-ul-Haq referendum, the 1985 non-party elections, the rise of Nawaz Sharif, the relationship between Zia-ul-Haq and Prime Minister Muhammad Khan Junejo, and the use of Article 58(2)(b) to remove the elected government.
Another major part of Zia-ul-Haq’s rule was the Afghan War.
After the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, Pakistan became a major player in the Soviet-Afghan War and the Afghan Jihad. Pakistan worked with the United States and Saudi Arabia, while billions of dollars in aid and weapons entered the region.
We also examine the economy of the Zia-ul-Haq era. Supporters often say that Pakistan had strong economic growth, lower inflation, cheap petrol and a stronger economy during his rule. This documentary looks at these claims and also examines the financial problems, IMF programs and the fall in the value of the Pakistani rupee.
So, was General Zia-ul-Haq a hero or a dictator?
Did his policies strengthen Pakistan, or did they create problems that Pakistan is still facing today?
From Zia-ul-Haq and Bhutto to Islamization, Afghan War, military rule, democracy, Pakistan’s economy, extremism, Afghan refugees, Kalashnikov culture and heroin, this documentary explores the major events and decisions that shaped modern Pakistan.
This is the story of General Zia-ul-Haq and his legacy in Pakistan.
