Description
Ships Can't Fly. So How Do They Cross A Dam? 🚢
In use since 2007. Ships can't fly. So how does one get past a 181-meter dam? It doesn't. The water rises to lift the ship up, then drains to bring it back down. Up or down, the trip takes about 4 hours.
That's the whole trick, and it's the reason ship lift engineering exists at all: you don't move the ship over the obstacle, you move the water. A canal lock fills a chamber until the ship floats level with the next stretch of river, then empties it on the other side. A boat lift does it with a moving caisson instead of a chamber — same principle, different machine. Either way, a ship elevator is really a water elevator, and the ship is just cargo riding it.
Four hours of rising and draining, to clear 181 meters.
