Description

Ukraine is hunting Russia’s most valuable air-defense systems — and Putin is being forced to move them around in an increasingly difficult effort to protect critical targets deep inside Russia. In this Power Faultlines analysis, we examine Ukraine’s expanding campaign against Russia’s S-400 air-defense network, including reported Ukrainian strikes on two S-400 launchers in Russia’s Bryansk region and a separate strike against a 92N6 radar associated with the S-400 system. These are not ordinary battlefield targets. The S-400 is one of Russia’s most important long-range air-defense systems, built to detect and engage aircraft, drones and missiles. But Ukraine’s strategy appears to go far beyond destroying individual launchers. Ukrainian forces have been targeting the wider architecture behind Russia’s air defenses — including radar systems, surface-to-air missile systems and electronic-warfare equipment. According to Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, Ukrainian forces recorded 300 Russian air-defense assets effectively neutralized over a 261-day period, including 162 air-defense systems, 124 radars and 14 electronic-warfare systems. The pressure comes as Russia attempts to defend an enormous territory against increasingly long-range Ukrainian drone and missile attacks. Air-defense systems are needed around Moscow, strategic industrial facilities, oil infrastructure and other important sites — forcing Russia to decide what gets protected and where its limited high-value systems should be positioned. We also examine Ukraine’s strikes against Atlant Aero in Taganrog, a facility connected to production and testing of Russia’s Molniya-series drones. Ukrainian forces returned to the site with another strike involving Neptune cruise missiles, while other reported attacks targeted drone-production infrastructure, a Pantsir air-defense system and a P-18 radar. The bigger question is no longer simply whether Ukrainian drones can penetrate Russian airspace. It is whether Ukraine can systematically weaken the network designed to stop them — destroying radars, launchers and supporting systems faster than Russia can replace, relocate and protect them. Watch to the end for the full breakdown of Ukraine’s evolving deep-strike campaign, Russia’s S-400 problem, and why Russian air defenses are becoming increasingly important targets in the Russia-Ukraine war.
