Description
The mending basket most of us remember was never really about the sewing. It worked because the night was named - the lamp already lit, the needles already threaded, the week's casualties already sorted with their repairs pinned on. Modern homes kept the basket and dropped the night, which is why the pile grows while the fix stays five minutes long.
In this video Eleanor walks the whole system the way it actually ran: why a loose button is really four small frictions stacked on one job, how the basket collected casualties all week with their repairs attached, the working order that put quick jobs first and ended the hour clean, the deliberately small kit - needles, thread card, thimble, small scissors, darning egg, beeswax - and the honest triage line that sent failed fabric to the rag bag and big work to the tradesman without guilt.
Then the rebuild, which fits in a phone and a corner: name the evening, stage the basket somewhere visible, stage the kit once, set the lamp, and let the hour end clean. Grandma had no more skill than you have. She had Tuesday.
What is the one garment sitting in your own mending pile right now - and which night would you give it?
