Description

In 2007, divers exploring Hoyo Negro, a flooded cave system beneath Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, discovered the remarkably preserved skeleton of a teenage girl later named Naia. Dating evidence places her at roughly 12,000–13,000 years old, making her one of the oldest and most complete human remains discovered in the Americas. Scientists were able to recover mitochondrial DNA from one of her teeth and identified a D1 haplotype, a lineage associated with Native American populations and believed to have developed in Beringia. What made Naia especially fascinating was the contrast between her ancient skull morphology and her genetic connection to Indigenous peoples of the Americas. In this video, we explore Naia, ancient DNA, Paleoamericans, Native American ancestry, Beringia, Hoyo Negro, Mexican cave discoveries, the first Americans, human migration, and Ice Age archaeology to uncover what this extraordinary discovery revealed about the earliest populations of the Americas. #Naia #NaiaDNA #AncientDNA #HoyoNegro #Mexico #Yucatan #FirstAmericans #NativeAmericanAncestry #Paleoamerican #Beringia #HumanEvolution #AncientHistory #Archaeology #Genetics #dnahistory
