Description
How did Mongol nomads survive and even sleep through brutal -40°C winters without electricity, modern insulation, central heating, or modern winter sleeping bags?
For families living across the freezing Mongolian steppe, surviving the night wasn't about one secret invention. It was an entire survival system built around the Mongolian ger, thick felt insulation, traditional clothing, raised bedding, shared body heat, and a carefully positioned central fire.
In this video, we explore how ancient Mongols and Mongol nomads stayed warm during extreme winter temperatures and why the traditional Mongolian ger was so effective in some of the harshest climates on Earth.
You'll discover how thick layers of sheep-wool felt trapped warm air inside the ger and protected families from freezing winds, why sleeping directly on the frozen ground could be dangerous, and how raised beds and insulating materials prevented body heat from disappearing into the earth.
We also look at the traditional Mongolian deel, which wasn't simply clothing. During the night, these heavy garments could become part of the family's sleeping system, providing another layer of insulation against the cold.
But one of the most overlooked survival tools was the family itself.
Several people sleeping inside a relatively small, enclosed ger continuously released body heat. Combined with the compact circular design of the shelter, that warmth helped raise the temperature inside and reduced heat loss throughout the night.
At the center of everything was the hearth or stove. Positioned near the middle of the ger beneath the roof opening, the fire distributed warmth throughout the shelter. Even when the flames disappeared, glowing embers could continue providing heat for hours.
Together, these systems created an incredibly effective form of ancient winter engineering:
• Thick felt ger insulation
• Raised sleeping areas
• Traditional Mongolian deel clothing
• Shared human body heat
• A central stove or hearth
The Mongols didn't survive extreme winters because of one miraculous trick. Their homes, clothing, sleeping habits, and nomadic lifestyle were all designed around one fundamental rule: keep body heat from escaping faster than it could be replaced.
This is how Mongol nomads survived -40°C temperatures, slept through freezing winter nights, and lived for generations across one of the coldest inhabited landscapes in the world.
And surviving the cold was only one challenge.
How did Mongolian nomads carry enough food to survive months of travel across an empty frozen landscape without refrigerators, electricity, or places to restock?
That's where the story gets even stranger.
