Description

A pot of soup is the single most useful thing a person living alone can make, and almost nobody tells you that, because every soup recipe you have ever read was written for a family of six. Here is what I want you to know before we start. Soup is the one thing that gets better sitting in the icebox. Everything else goes downhill the minute it comes off the stove. Soup goes the other way. Which means for somebody cooking for one, soup is not a meal. It is four meals and one washing up. Ten soups. One pot each. Every one keeps at least four days and eight of the ten freeze. Most take under half an hour and two take under ten minutes. Stay for number nine, because that is the one for August, when it is ninety degrees on this island and the last thing you want is something hot. I am Denise, and I cook in this kitchen by myself now. Tell me which soup your own mother made. And tell me what county you are in. I read them all.
