Description

The CIA's real Argo mission: Tony Mendez trains six US diplomats to flee Tehran as a fake Hollywood crew. This is the declassified story hidden for 17 years. Iran, 1979: student militants storm the US Embassy as the Iran hostage crisis erupts. Amid the chaos, six Americans slip out and move between safe houses before John Sheardown and Ambassador Kenneth Taylor shelter them inside the House of Canadian Diplomats. As the days stretch into weeks, fear, boredom and close calls mount. Back in Washington, top-secret flash cables land on the desk of CIA exfiltration specialist Tony Mendez. With the Office of Technical Service, he builds Studio Six, a fake Hollywood production based at Sunset Gower Studios, complete with pocket litter, Canadian passports, the sci-fi script Lord of Light renamed Argo, and help from Oscar-winning makeup artist John Chambers. The cover is simple, bold, and just plausible enough to pass in a country still courting film investment. Mendez and a colleague codenamed Julia reach Tehran, issue aliases, and drill the group in cover stories. He forges critical entry records at the Canadian embassy, even reviving a dry ink pad with a splash of scotch to match Iranian stamps. A no-nonsense mock interrogation drives home the stakes. On January 25, 1980, they attempt the audacious plan: walk out in daylight as a location-scouting crew. At Tehran airport, a trimmed moustache nearly derails Lee Schatz at passport control. Final immigration could cross-check yellow exit cards against missing white entry forms. Then Swiss Air Flight 363 is delayed, revolutionary guards fill the terminal, and small slip-ups threaten the ruse. Calm and steady, Mendez keeps the team composed until boarding is called. No chase, no shots - just liftoff to Zurich and a quiet goodbye as the operatives vanish back into the shadows. Kept secret for 17 years, this is the granular, real operation behind the Oscar-winning Argo and how the CIA fooled everyone. #CIADeclassified #Argo #TonyMendez #IranHostageCrisis #StudioSix #JohnChambers #Tehran
