Seamaster, Sea Dart and the Caspian Sea Monster: The Seaplane Arms Race

Jets on water, nukes in the hull, and a monster skimming the Caspian at 300 mph. This is the untold Cold War race to build the ultimate seaplane strike force. From Martin’s Seamaster with its rotating bomb bay to Convair’s Sea Dart roaring off the bay on retractable water skis, we go inside the Navy’s bold plan to move the nuclear deterrent off runways and onto the ocean. Rare footage reveals sub-to-seaplane refueling with USS Guavina, titanium-laced airframes, and the air-intake tricks that kept salt spray from killing jet engines. Then the story flips: spy satellites spot a vast Soviet shape. Kelly Johnson does the math, and the “Caspian Sea Monster” finally makes sense. Discover why Admiral Arleigh Burke kept the dream alive after costly crashes, how USS Forrestal and Polaris missiles changed everything, and why Alexeyev’s ekranoplans morphed from Orlyonok troop lifters to the missile-bristling Loon. The pivotal moments are here—but the most surprising answers are in the film. Watch to see how these bizarre machines nearly rewrote naval warfare. #Seamaster #SeaDart #Ekranoplan #CaspianSeaMonster #ColdWar #NavyHistory #Aviation #Documentary
