Google's Gemini 4 Argon is here, and it promises to turn simple text prompts into working software. But can Google's latest AI coding model actually build functional apps, or does it just create impressive-looking demos that fall apart under testing?
I put Gemini 4 Argon through four real-world coding challenges using just ONE prompt per project: a travel booking website, a personal finance tracker, a real-time arcade shooter, and a Trello-style project management app.
The results were impressive. But the bugs revealed something Google's benchmark numbers don't tell you.
Google initially introduced Argon on September 30, 2026, for select cybersecurity defenders and internal teams before expanding access on October 13 through the paid Gemini API, Google AI Studio, Antigravity, Gemini Enterprise, and eligible Gemini subscriptions.
But how does it compare with OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra and Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5?
According to Google's published benchmarks, Argon scores 77.9% on DeepSWE and 91.9% on Vibe Code Bench, outperforming several competing frontier models. However, the same comparison places Argon behind competitors on FrontierSWE v2 and Terminal-Bench 4.0.
That distinction matters. Generating a polished interface isn't necessarily the same as debugging an existing codebase or completing complex engineering tasks.
And then there's the pricing.
Gemini 4 Argon launches at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, making it significantly cheaper than some frontier competitors. But those introductory rates are scheduled to DOUBLE on December 1, reaching $4 and $20.
So is Argon really the best value in AI coding, or is Google's pricing advantage temporary?
To find out what the model can actually deliver, I tested four increasingly demanding applications.
**🌍 Wanderly — AI Travel Booking Website**
A premium travel platform featuring destination cards, search, category filters, price sorting, booking forms, and persistent favorites.
The challenge wasn't just creating a beautiful website. Every interaction needed to work.
**Score: 9/10**
**💰 PennyPilot — Personal Finance Dashboard**
A finance tracker featuring transaction management, dynamic charts, expense calculations, budget monitoring, and local data storage.
I tested whether editing expenses correctly updated the balance, charts, and totals without introducing calculation errors.
**Score: 8/10**
**🎮 Neon Defender — Real-Time Arcade Shooter**
A playable retro space shooter built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, featuring keyboard controls, enemies, lasers, collision detection, power-ups, and increasing difficulty.
This challenge exposed problems that static screenshots and code-generation benchmarks can easily miss.
**Score: 7.5/10**
**📋 FlowBoard — Trello-Style Project Management App**
A functional Kanban board with task creation, editing, priorities, due dates, drag-and-drop movement, progress tracking, filters, and persistent storage.
The real challenge was keeping all those interconnected features synchronized.
**Score: 8/10**
Across all four builds, Gemini 4 Argon averaged approximately **8.1/10** in my hands-on testing.
But these are practical ratings from single-prompt projects, not standardized benchmarks or proof that Argon is the best coding AI.
We also examine Google's more ambitious demonstrations, including a miniature racing game built from desk photographs, a Blender-generated temple environment, and a robotics experiment involving cornhole.
Those demonstrations show what's possible with advanced AI tooling, but they also raise an important question: how much comes from the model itself, and how much depends on the surrounding tools?
By the end, you'll see where Gemini 4 Argon genuinely delivers, where it still struggles, and whether AI-generated applications are ready for real-world use without human intervention.
Can Google compete with Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra in practical software development? And what happens when Argon's promotional pricing disappears?
Watch the full comparison and decide for yourself.
