Description

Tesla's new Roadster just drove upside down, flipped through the air, and jumped over a Cybertruck and a Semi in Texas. Elon Musk is talking about a sub-one-second 0–60 mph sprint. But did Tesla actually build a flying car, or is the real engineering story being buried under the hype? At Tesla's October 15 demonstration in McGregor, Texas, the next-generation Roadster performed stunts using SpaceX-inspired cold-gas thrusters and powerful underbody suction fans. Reporters from Reuters, Wired, and TechCrunch described a prototype capable of leaving the ground, rotating in mid-air, and landing back on its wheels. But sustained flight is an entirely different challenge. The Roadster's so-called rocket thrusters don't burn rocket fuel. Instead, ten compressed-air thrusters reportedly draw from roughly 600 litres of high-pressure air stored in carbon-fibre pressure vessels. Underbody fans provide the suction needed for the upside-down driving trick, while the thrusters help with aerial manoeuvres. It's impressive technology, but it raises major questions about safety, repeatability, and real-world practicality. Then there's Tesla's extraordinary acceleration claim: 0–60 mph in approximately 0.8 seconds. That would mean around 3.4 g of average acceleration, far beyond what conventional road tires can achieve through traction alone. Tesla says its thrusters can provide additional force, but no independent testing has verified that performance. And the biggest catch? Not every Roadster gets the thrusters. Tesla has outlined three versions: the two-seat Performance, the rear-thruster-equipped Thrust, and the reportedly invite-only, single-seat Rocket with all ten thrusters. The headline-grabbing sub-one-second acceleration belongs to the specialized thruster configuration, not the standard Roadster. We also compare Tesla's claims against the Rimac Nevera, Pininfarina Battista, and Lucid Air Sapphire, and revisit how the Roadster has changed since its original 2017 announcement. Four seats and 620 miles of promised range have become two seats and more than 300 miles, while the production target has slipped to 2028. Final pricing remains unannounced. Can Tesla make compressed-air thrusters safe for public roads? Can the system repeatedly deliver extreme acceleration? Will customers actually receive the SpaceX package? And does a brief airborne stunt really qualify as a flying car? The Texas demonstration was remarkable. Turning it into a road-legal production vehicle may be Tesla's biggest challenge yet.
