Description
The Impossible 400-Kilometer Wall Japan Built That You've Never Heard Of
After the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami killed nearly 19,000 people, Japan committed to building one of the largest coastal defense projects on Earth — roughly 400 kilometers of new concrete seawalls along the Tōhoku coast, some sections taller than a four-story building, costing more than 9 billion dollars. This is the story of how that wall got built town by town, the fishing communities that fought against it, the one village whose oversized 1980s seawall already saved every resident in 2011, and the ongoing argument over whether walling off the coast was ever the right answer at all.
