Description

Power does something strange to people. And the people who had the most of it — no limits, no consequences, no one who could say no — did some of the strangest things in recorded history. This video goes through all of them. Frederick William I of Prussia kidnapped tall men from across Europe to build a personal regiment of giants. Louis XIV turned getting out of bed into a daily political ceremony where the most powerful men in France competed to hand him his socks. Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China, drank mercury pills trying to become immortal — and the mercury slowly poisoned his brain while he kept drinking. Ludwig II of Bavaria nearly bankrupted his kingdom building fairy-tale castles including a underground lake with a golden shell-boat he rode alone at night. Commodus declared himself Hercules reincarnated, fought disabled men in the arena with a padded club, and charged Rome a million sesterces per appearance. Elagabalus released tame lions and leopards into rooms where his dinner guests were sleeping specifically to terrify them on waking. Peter III of Russia held a formal military tribunal for a rat that chewed the head off one of his toy soldiers, found it guilty, and had it publicly hanged. Nero locked theater doors so nobody could leave during his performances — and some senators faked death to escape. And Pope Stephen VI had his predecessor's corpse dug up, dressed in papal robes, put on trial, found guilty, and thrown in the Tiber. Power does not change people. It reveals them. DISCLAIMER: Historical accounts presented are drawn from ancient and medieval sources including Suetonius, Cassius Dio, and Tacitus. Some accounts, particularly regarding figures like Elagabalus and Nero, reflect sources with known political bias and are presented as historically documented claims rather than guaranteed fact. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ For business inquiries: [email protected] ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ #weirdhistory #royalhistory #history #historyfacts #ancienthistory
