Description

Every Pump Shotgun Ranked BEST To WORST — The 870 Isn't #1 🔗 THE BENCH BOOK + 2 TOOLS → https://dylanbenett.com A woman named Carol Dunbar brought her late husband's shotgun to my bench in March, and two people had already told her it was broken. She is sixty-nine. It was a Remington eight seventy, a plain black one with a worn wooden forend, and her husband had kept it by the bed for twenty years. After he died, she decided she was going to learn to use it herself. She took a class. She bought a box of target loads. She went to the range. And the shotgun jammed on her. Not once. Almost every time. She would fire a shell, work the pump, and the next shell would come up crooked and stick halfway into the chamber, nose first, wedged tight. The action would not close and it would not open. She had to hand it to the man running the range to clear it, three times in one afternoon, and she told me that by the third time she wanted to cry. The range officer told her the extractor was worn out. Old gun, he said. Then she took it to a sporting goods store, and the man behind the counter told her something she did not like at all. He said pump shotguns are hard for women, that she needed a semi automatic, and that he would take the eight seventy in trade for a hundred and twenty dollars toward a new one. She almost did it. She had the paperwork half filled out. I did not ask her about the extractor. I asked her if she would work the pump for me, right there at the bench, with a couple of dummy rounds.
