Description

In southern Iraq, there's a flooded square pit in the ground that tourists photograph without realizing what they're standing beside: the foundation of Etemenanki — "House of the Foundation of Heaven and Earth" — the 90-meter, seven-tiered ziggurat of Babylon that history remembers as the Tower of Babel. Nebuchadnezzar II claimed he gathered "all the peoples of the earth" to build it. The Sumerians recorded a time when mankind spoke one language — and recorded exactly who ended it, and why. Then in 331 BC, Alexander the Great ordered the tower dismantled so it could be rebuilt properly. Ten thousand men cleared the rubble in two months. And then Alexander died in Nebuchadnezzar's palace, a short walk from the empty foundation — before a single brick went back up. For over a thousand years, every ruler of Babylon had treated rebuilding this tower as a sacred obligation. After Alexander: silence. Not the Seleucids, not the Parthians, not anyone — for 2,300 years. The pit is still there. It fills with groundwater. And nobody has ever excavated beneath it.
