Description

San Francisco prosecutors say Sheryl Davis, who ran the city’s Human Rights Commission for eight years and oversaw the Dream Keeper Initiative, a fund created to invest in Black San Franciscans, misappropriated about $350,000 in public money. According to the charging papers, about $8.5 million in city contracts and grants went to Collective Impact, a nonprofit run by James Spingola, the man she lived with, and a second nonprofit paid her son more than $140,000, including $10,000 for five presentation slides for a panel she moderated. Davis faces 17 felonies and two misdemeanors and pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors say there is no evidence that former Mayor London Breed was involved, and they are not alleging a romantic relationship. So how did that money get approved? In this video: The contracts Davis signed, and the one a scoring panel recommended against How the shared bank accounts and checks are described in the charging papers The payments to her son, and where else prosecutors say the money went Why the city pulled back about $15 million, and who lost out What Davis’s attorney says, and why he calls the charges a distortion of the truth The Ethics Commission’s 31 counts and the $4.6 million the city says was spent improperly Why Spingola was denied a court appointed lawyer Sheryl Davis and James Spingola are charged, not convicted, and both are presumed innocent.
