Description
The Battle of Omdurman, 2 September 1898. On a plain outside Omdurman in Sudan, around 50,000 men of the Khalifa's army advanced on Kitchener's Anglo-Egyptian force of about 26,000. By midday the Mahdist state's army had been broken, and a 23-year-old Winston Churchill had ridden in one of the last great cavalry charges of the British Army.
In this video:
• Why Kitchener built a railway across the desert to reach Omdurman
• The Mahdist assault on the British and Egyptian lines
• The charge of the 21st Lancers, and how Churchill survived it
• MacDonald's brigade and the second attack
• Why Omdurman worked, and what it pointed to in 1914
Known in Sudan as the Battle of Karari.
