Description

The Battle of the Rosebud, 17 June 1876. Eight days before Custer rode into the Little Bighorn valley, Crazy Horse did something the US Army never expected: he didn't wait to be found. He attacked first. On Rosebud Creek in Montana Territory, General George Crook's column of around 1,000 soldiers, backed by Crow and Shoshone allies, was hit by Lakota and Cheyenne warriors in a running fight that lasted six hours. Crook held the field and called it a victory. Then he turned back, and took himself out of the campaign at exactly the moment Custer needed him. In this video: - Why the 1876 campaign was built on three columns converging - How Crazy Horse struck Crook before Crook could strike the villages - The Crow and Shoshone allies who kept Crook's column together - "Where the Girl Saved Her Brother", the Cheyenne name for the battle - Why a "victory" at the Rosebud set up the disaster at the Little Bighorn ▶ Watch next The Battle of Little Bighorn 1876: https://youtu.be/Y0ZpSyZ3FGE Rorke's Drift 1879: https://youtu.be/aQ-5ynRdpUw Isandlwana 1879: https://youtu.be/aorX0gEcI0c 📚 Sources Neil C.
