Description
Everyone knows Stalingrad.
Paulus. The German Sixth Army. The encirclement. The surrender.
But almost nobody remembers the armies standing on the German flanks when the Soviet counteroffensive began.
Romanian soldiers were holding enormous stretches of frozen steppe with inadequate anti-tank weapons, weak reserves, and defenses that were never built to withstand the Soviet forces coming toward them.
Then, two months later, it was Hungary's turn.
The Hungarian Second Army faced another massive Soviet offensive on the Don — and thousands of soldiers were forced into a desperate retreat through a frozen landscape where temperatures fell below -40°C.
These were the armies that stood between the Red Army and the German forces around Stalingrad.
They were outnumbered. Outgunned. And in many cases, fighting with weapons that were already obsolete.
Yet after the war, their collapse was often remembered as a failure of courage.
This is the forgotten side of Stalingrad.
The Romanian divisions that absorbed the opening blow of Operation Uranus.
The tank crews who attacked Soviet T-34s with guns they knew could barely hurt them.
The Hungarian soldiers who fought, froze, and disappeared on the Don.
And the commanders forced to make impossible decisions as entire armies collapsed around them.
Because the story of Stalingrad isn't only about the Germans trapped inside the city.
It's also about the forgotten armies standing outside it.
And they were standing exactly where the Red Army needed to break through.
