Description

Something has changed about the everyday shopping experience in America. Retail workers describe unpredictable schedules, burnout, short staffing and having to absorb more work whenever someone calls out. Small-business owners say rising costs are squeezing already-thin margins. Customers are walking into stores that feel disorganized, understaffed and increasingly frustrating to shop in. But this episode also looks at the other side of the counter. Some shoppers leave merchandise scattered across stores. Closing-time frustrations get taken out on employees who did not create the problem. And in one store, visibly deteriorating produce raises the most basic question of all: if prices keep climbing, why does the experience sometimes feel like it is getting worse? The point isn’t that every retailer is failing or every customer behaves badly. It’s that pressure seems to be building throughout the entire system — and the person standing closest to you is often the one who ends up taking the blame. We look at real experiences from retail workers, customers and a small-business owner, along with research on employee scheduling pressure and inflation challenges facing retail businesses. If you work in retail — or shopping lately has felt noticeably different where you live — I’d like to know what you’re seeing.
