Description
America now has more than $1.2 trillion sitting on credit cards, but the story is more complicated than people simply spending too much.
In this episode of Everyday Perspective, host Kayla looks at what credit-card debt actually looks like for ordinary Americans — including a woman carrying more than $25,000 in card debt while earning around $28,000 to $30,000 a year, a 24-year-old dealing with roughly $110,000 in total debt, a married household trying to make its balance feel less overwhelming, and one loan application with around $141,000 in credit-card debt.
Some of these people openly admit that bad decisions contributed to the problem. But the numbers also point to something larger: high interest rates, low financial cushions, student debt, housing costs and ordinary expenses are making it increasingly difficult for many households to recover once debt starts accumulating.
Kayla looks at current Federal Reserve and labor data to understand where personal responsibility ends and where income, prices and the wider economy begin to matter.
Because once a credit card stops being something you use occasionally and starts becoming the bridge between one paycheck and the next, the debt is doing a very different job.
