Description
On the night of 31 January 1953, the North Sea came over the dikes while an entire country slept. By morning, 1,836 people were dead — roughly the toll Hurricane Katrina took across the entire US Gulf Coast, in a single night.
The Dutch didn't rebuild what they had. They decided the sea would never do it again.
What followed is a country where a quarter of the land sits below the ocean. They erased an inland sea from the map, pumped a whole province out of a lake, built a barrier that breathes with the tide so the oyster beds could live, and installed two steel gates that decide for themselves when to shut. Amsterdam's airport sits on a lake bed where warships once fought a battle. Rotterdam's newest port stands on ocean floor.
And when the levees failed in New Orleans, American engineers came here for answers.
