Description

Japan built a highway that drives straight out to sea, then disappears beneath the waves. 🌊🇯🇵 In the middle of Tokyo Bay, the Aqua-Line crosses about 15 km of open water. Cars race along a bridge far from land, stop at an island rest area in the middle of the sea, then dive into a tunnel nearly 10 km long under one of the busiest bays on Earth. 🚗 To build it, Japan sent eight giant tunnel boring machines into soft mud beneath the seabed, each one 14 meters wide and weighing about 3,200 tons. They met face to face in total darkness, around 60 meters below the surface. And it opened in 1997, 21 years before China's famous sea crossing. ⏱️ In this documentary, we explore: 🗺️ Why Tokyo Bay was a wall between two neighbors 🇺🇸 The American bridge-tunnel that did it first 🏗️ The giant concrete shaft built in the middle of the sea 💧 The day water started pouring in from below 🛠️ Eight machines meeting underground, and freezing the seabed ✈️ Why the road disappears: the ships below and the planes above 🏝️ Umihotaru, the rest stop in the middle of the sea 🌬️ The mysterious striped tower people thought was a secret base 📉 The road nobody wanted, and its incredible comeback Would you drive a road that disappears into the sea?
