On August 23, 1944, Romania abruptly switched sides in World War Two, with King Michael I leading a coup that overthrew the pro-Axis government of Ion Antonescu and aligned the country with the Allies. The reversal caught German forces off guard, but they responded quickly and violently: in Transylvania, combined German and Hungarian units launched a rapid counteroffensive before Soviet reinforcements could arrive to support Romania's now-reorganized army. In early September 1944, the 2nd Hungarian Army and German divisions pushed back Romania's 4th Army by 20 to 50 kilometers in the Turda area, overwhelming some isolated Romanian units in the process. Romania's rear-line forces, often made up of inexperienced recruits and older soldiers with little armor or heavy weaponry, struggled against the counterattack until Soviet forces linked up and turned the tide by mid-September.
