Description

#CannedMeat #Stockpile #FrugalLiving The cheapest can of meat on the shelf is almost never the one with the most meat in it. My mother fed nine of us out of a cupboard, and she kept six cans of meat, a supper for every one of them, and walked past the rest. Here are her six, with what each one costs at Walmart this week, the cans that look like bargains and are not, and how to keep them safe. 📖 My mother's whole way of running a house is written down in one book, The Old Mexican Way: https://oldmexicanway.com None of this is your fault. Nobody teaches you to read a can from the back. The 6: 6. Corned beef, carne de lata con papas, about $3.20 for the store brand 5. Sardines in tomato sauce, about $2 for 15 ounces 4. Vienna sausages, 86 cents, with eggs a la mexicana 3. Spam, fried with egg and rice, about $3.60 to $4 2. Tuna, 96 cents, tostadas de atún 1. Canned chicken, about $2.60, tinga in ten minutes Walk past: the fancy albacore, potted meat, dried beef in the jar and canned stew. Each one costs more per pound than fresh chicken thighs. Said plainly: never buy or keep a can that is bulging, leaking, rusted or dented on the seam. Store cans cool and dry. Once opened, into a covered dish in the fridge and eat it within three or four days. Watch the salt, and pick the lower sodium can when it is there. Rinse the tuna and the chicken. This is about cooking and money, not medical advice.
