Description

What did ANCIENT humans do before toilets? Seriously. No bathroom. No toilet paper. No plumbing. No flush button to make the evidence disappear and pretend nothing happened. For most of human history, people had to figure it out themselves. Hunter-gatherers could simply move away from camp. But once humans started building permanent villages, things got a lot more complicated. Waste piled up. Parasites spread. Water could become contaminated. And suddenly, where you went to the bathroom became everyone else's problem too. In this video, I take you through the strange, surprisingly important history of how ancient humans dealt with human waste. From prehistoric camps and ancient poop found in Paisley Caves to the packed homes of Çatalhöyük, Stonehenge-era settlements, Skara Brae, and the incredible drainage systems of the Indus Valley Civilization. It turns out the toilet is more than just a seat with plumbing. It's thousands of years of humans slowly learning one important lesson: Keep the gross stuff away from where you eat. And drink. And sleep. Because apparently, civilization had to learn that one the hard way. Sources: 1. Paisley Caves archaeological research and evidence of early human occupation in North America 2.
