What DNA Revealed About The Men Buried Beneath America's First Church Is Extremely Shocking Four centuries after Jamestown was founded, archaeologists uncovered four elite graves beneath the remains of America’s first Anglican church. But when scientists analyzed the ancient DNA preserved inside the skeletons, they discovered a hidden family story that had been erased from official records for generations. This video explores the remarkable investigation into Reverend Robert Hunt, Captain Gabriel Archer, Sir Ferdinando Wenman, and Captain William West. A mysterious Catholic reliquary found on Archer’s coffin raises questions about secret religious networks inside the supposedly Protestant colony, while mitochondrial DNA from Wenman and West reveals an unexpected maternal connection. The genetic evidence ultimately leads researchers back to Elizabeth West, a noblewoman whose official genealogy claimed she died unmarried. A forgotten seventeenth-century court case, however, identified William West as her son. Combined with their rare shared H10e mitochondrial DNA, the discovery reconstructs a family relationship concealed for roughly four hundred years. From secret Catholic symbolism to erased bloodlines, this is the story of how archaeology, historical records, and ancient DNA gave names and identities back to people history had nearly forgotten.
