People Ate Mummies as Medicine — 'Mumia' Apothecary Jars Prove It | Joe Rogan & Dan Richards #jre

Joe Rogan Experience #2563 - Dan Richards People ate mummies — not in a horror movie, but in Europe's apothecaries and in the dining rooms of the rich. Joe Rogan and Dan Richards pull up the receipts: antique apothecary jars labeled "Mumia," and an article explaining that for centuries people ate mummies as medicine, ground into powder, until supplies got so scarce that dealers started forging mummy bodies. Then, in 1834, surgeon Thomas Pettigrew unwrapped a mummy in public at the Royal College of Surgeons — and soon wealthy hosts were throwing mummy unwrapping parties at home, strong drinks in hand. Before that rabbit hole, Dan makes his boldest claim of the night: Zahi Hawass is deliberately playing a wrestling-style heel to drive tourism to Egypt. From there the conversation runs through skeletons that vanished from a sarcophagus, the missing Baghdad Battery and Dan's theory that it was used to separate gold from mine runoff, the curse of Tutankhamun's tomb, a $3 billion-a-year antiquities black market, and the Copper Scroll — a Dead Sea Scroll that turns out to be a treasure map of 64 places where gold and silver were hidden. If you never believed people ate mummies, this clip will change your mind — and make you wonder whose shelf the missing artifacts are sitting on right now.
