Description

My name is Darlene Hollis. I cooked in a school kitchen for thirty-five years, and we fed four hundred children a day with no warning when the inspector was coming. You are not lazy. You cleaned last Saturday — cleaned hard, most of the day — and by Wednesday the house looks like nobody has touched it in a month. The picture in your head is wrong. A house does not get dirty evenly and it does not get clean in events. Five or six spots do almost all the work of looking dirty. Keep those caught up and a stranger calls your house clean with dust still on the guest room lampshade. Let them go and you can vacuum every rug you own and the place still reads as a mess. And fresh mess wipes off. Old mess has to be fought. Miss Doris, who trained me, used to say we don't clean this kitchen because it's dirty, we clean it because it's four o'clock. On the clock, not on the mess. That is the whole difference between a chore and a fight. So you set a timer for twenty minutes, one morning a week. Six minutes kitchen, six minutes bathroom, four minutes the floors that show, four minutes walking a laundry basket through the house. Timer rings, you stop, even if you see more. One spray bottle, warm water, a squirt of dish soap, two rags cut from a worn-out towel. Under ten dollars a year against the hundred I used to spend on wipes alone. In this video I show you the six spots that do all the looking, the twenty minutes minute by minute, why counters come before floors, the one-week dig-out for a house already gone too far, the empty-sink-at-night habit that holds it together, and the rag drawer that costs nothing. I also tell you where it falls short. Twenty minutes maintains a house — it does not rescue one. --- WHAT YOU WILL NEED One spray bottle — about a dollar and a quarter at the dollar store Plain dish soap and warm water — a few cents a month Two rags cut from a worn-out bath towel — twelve squares to a towel, free An old cotton undershirt for glass — it will not leave lint A timer, and an empty laundry basket for the last four minutes A WORD OF CAUTION Soap and water cleans. It does not sanitize. After raw meat touches a counter — hot soapy wash, good rinse, then a proper sanitizer used exactly the way the label says. Keep the bathroom rag and the kitchen rag as separate as church and Saturday night. And never mix bleach with anything but water. If this was useful to you, subscribe. I put up the plain old ways of keeping a house every week. #cleaningroutine #homemaking #grandmawisdom #oldfashionedcleaning #frugalliving #cleaningtips #homekeeping #20minutecleaning
