Description

Some of the things most associated with Japan didn’t actually originate there. First, tempura. Tempura is one of Japan’s most famous foods. However, historians generally trace the batter frying technique to Portuguese traders and missionaries who arrived in Japan centuries ago. Japanese chefs later refined the method and transformed it into the tempura we know today. Second, matcha. Matcha is often considered one of Japan’s signature drinks. But the practice of processing tea into powdered form originally developed in China. The technique was later introduced to Japan, where it became deeply connected to Japanese tea culture and was preserved for centuries. Third, bonsai. Many people immediately associate bonsai with Japan. However, the art of cultivating miniature trees originated from the Chinese tradition known as penjing. After arriving in Japan, the practice evolved into the bonsai style that became famous around the world. Japan may not have invented these things, but it played a huge role in developing and popularizing them. #japan #japanfacts #japaneseculture
