Description
**ONE HACKER. 100+ WEBSITES. AI DID THE WORK?**
Could one cybercriminal use autonomous artificial intelligence agents to attack more than 1,200 websites—and compromise more than 100 of them?
A major investigation published October 19, 2026, by cybersecurity researchers at NorForge reveals how a criminal operator used the Cairn multi-agent framework to conduct extended, automated website intrusion campaigns with limited human involvement.
Even more surprising: researchers discovered that some of the attackers had left their own AI control panels exposed to the internet, providing an extraordinary look inside their operations.
In today's episode of **Cybersecurity Today**, we examine how these autonomous agents operated, what investigators verified, and why this development could change the economics of cybercrime.
🔎 **WHAT YOU'LL LEARN**
- How autonomous AI agents can investigate websites and adapt when an initial attack fails.
- Why researchers reported more than 1,200 attempted intrusions and over 100 successful compromises.
- How exposed AI control panels revealed attack instructions, operational records, and sensitive credentials.
- What Reuters discovered about websites associated with Deere, SharkNinja, and Cummins.
- Why an estimated $5,000 in AI operating costs raises serious questions about the scalability of cybercrime.
- Four practical defensive actions organizations can take against AI-assisted intrusion campaigns.
🚨 **ADDITIONAL SECURITY UPDATE: UPDRAFTCENTRAL**
TeamUpdraft has disclosed a security incident involving its WordPress backup and remote-management services.
Patchstack researchers observed attackers abusing valid UpdraftCentral connection keys to install malicious plugins on connected WordPress websites.
TeamUpdraft released emergency UpdraftPlus updates:
- Free: Version 1.26.12
- Premium: Version 2.26.12
Organizations using UpdraftCentral should follow the vendor's latest remediation guidance, investigate suspicious plugins and administrator accounts, and verify whether older remote-management connections have been disabled.
**Important:** Updating the plugin does not necessarily remove malware already installed.
⚠️ **WHAT THE EVIDENCE DOES — AND DOES NOT — ESTABLISH**
The reported 1,200-plus website intrusions were attempts, not confirmed successful breaches.
The more than 100 reported compromises were not all independently verified. The estimated AI operating cost is a researcher's calculation, not an audited total.
The full extent of stolen data remains uncertain. Chinese-language instructions do not establish Chinese government sponsorship.
**FOUR DEFENSIVE PRIORITIES**
1. Inventory internet-facing websites, administrative panels, and third-party services.
2. Patch exploitable web application vulnerabilities and restrict exposed administrative interfaces.
3. Monitor suspicious activity, unexpected files, unauthorized accounts, and outbound connections.
4. Protect AI-agent dashboards, credentials, permissions, and audit logs.
