Description

The .45 ACP has been trusted for more than a century—but does a 1911 belong in grizzly country? This video separates the cartridge from the ammunition inside it. Standard defensive hollow points are designed to expand and stop inside a human-sized target, exactly the opposite of what you want when a bullet must penetrate hide, fat, and heavy bone. Hard-cast +P ammunition changes the equation dramatically, giving the .45 far greater penetration. That can make it a workable option for black bear defense. Grizzlies are a different problem. Limited magazine capacity, heavy bone, and the speed of a close charge leave the traditional 1911 with less margin than higher-capacity 10mm pistols firing hard-cast ammunition. And throughout it all, bear spray remains a critical first-line defensive tool.
