Description

Inside an old underground burial chamber in San Fiorano, Italy, an international bioarchaeology team from AITA Bioarchaeology discovered a small wooden coffin containing the remains of a newborn. The infant was found in its original burial position, with the wooden coffin, hair and textiles remarkably preserved after nearly two centuries. The burial site's unusual environmental conditions also helped preserve other delicate materials, including some soft tissues and parts of the brain in other human remains. However, the condition of the bones and teeth was poor in several cases. The newborn's exact age and cause of death have not yet been established. This discovery offers researchers a rare opportunity to investigate how infants were buried in the past and how environmental conditions influence the preservation of human remains. The remains are being temporarily removed while conservation work takes place. Water infiltration and moisture have been damaging historic wall paintings in the burial chambers, creating concerns about the long-term preservation of the remains as well. After repairs, cleaning, scientific examination and conservation are completed, the plan is to return the remains to their original locations. 📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/archevault 📺 Main Channel: @Archevault
