Description

For most of a thousand years, the best-known book in Europe was a book almost no one could read. The Bible was written in Latin, copied by hand, and in many places literally chained to the wall. To translate it into the language of ordinary people was, in some times and places, a crime punishable by death. Men were burned at the stake for putting the words of Jesus into English. This is Episode 8 of The Church Through the Ages, a cinematic documentary series tracing the full 2,000-year story of the Christian Church. In this episode we follow the most dangerous book in the world as it is guarded, translated at the cost of men's lives, and finally set free by a machine that changed everything.
