Description

The Hammer Falls | Martin Luther and the Birth of the Reformation (Ep. 9) On the 31st of October, 1517, a monk is said to have walked up to the door of a church in Wittenberg and nailed a list of ninety-five points to it. He was not trying to start a revolution. He was a professor inviting a debate. But that list would spread across Europe within weeks, shatter the unity of the Western church, and change the course of history. His name was Martin Luther, and he had no idea what he had just begun. This is Episode 9 of The Church Through the Ages, a cinematic documentary series tracing the full 2,000-year story of the Christian Church. In this episode we follow Luther from a tormented young monk to the man who stood before an emperor and would not back down, and we see how one protest became the Reformation. In this episode: The thunderstorm vow that made Luther a monk His torment over how a sinful person could ever be right with God The discovery of grace in the letter to the Romans The sale of indulgences and the scandal that lit the fire The Ninety-Five Theses and how the printing press spread them across Europe The Diet of Worms, and the famous words “Here I stand” Luther’s German Bible, and the birth of the Protestants
