Description

On the morning of July 22nd, 2013, a 66-year-old woman stepped off the Appalachian Trail in Maine for a minute, and when she turned around, the trail was gone. Three times, the people searching for her came within a hundred yards of her tent. These are the five things I watched these mountains take men with in forty-two years of cutting timber, and the real stories of the people they took after us. The water that doesn't rise, it arrives. The thing that was waiting up in the trees. The woods that all look the same a hundred feet in. The snow that closes the road behind you. And the one at the end that nobody, not the rangers and not the FBI, has ever been able to explain. Harlan Sawyer. Pocahontas County, West Virginia. Forty-two years in the timber, 1969 to 2011. Look up before you sit down, friend. Every case in this video is real and documented. Sources: e-WV The West Virginia Encyclopedia and NOAA on the 1985 Election Day floods; CBS News, Associated Press and the Maryland DNR on the death of Jason Parish at the Ed Garvey Shelter, March 2015; NIOSH Alert 95-101 on logging deaths; Maine Warden Service and published reports on the disappearance of Geraldine Largay (2013-2015); WBIR, WATE and National Park Service reports on the March 1993 blizzard in the Great Smoky Mountains; National Park Service records on the disappearance of Dennis Martin, June 1969. If you're lost: stop, stay put, blow a whistle in threes.
